Michiko Van de Velde
Michiko Van de Velde is a Belgian-Japanese artist. Her earliest observations of light found expression very early on through oil painting, which she began at the age of seven. She then studied at the École de La Cambre in Brussels, where she earned her degree in graphic design in 2017, and later in London, where she studied Fine Arts at Central Saint Martins School.
Since then, she has developed a multifaceted artistic practice—painting, ceramics, drawing, printmaking, and video—centered around two key themes: natural light and her dual cultural identity as a Belgian and a Japanese. She exhibits regularly in both countries.
Her research on the sun and its luminous phenomena informs large-scale projects: she exhibited her first large canvas, 5 meters long, at the Boghossian Foundation and has just completed a permanent installation related to the summer solstice near the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Tournai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
