A starry sky in concert: SPECTRA renders a unique interpretation of our fascination with the firmament. In an adaptation specially made for this setting, SPECTRA positions eight musicians and loudspeakers over the length, breadth and depth of the Vanhaerents Art Collection. In his work Atlas Eclipticalis, John Cage was inspired by the collection of sky maps published by Czech astronomer Antonín Becvár in 1958.

He literally took this book as a point of departure: on top of the star charts, he placed staves on which he drew larger or smaller dots according to the stars’ brightness. The result is a murmuring multitude of subtly buzzing dots in a sonorous firmament. Karlheinz Stockhausen on the other hand departed from astrology for his Tierkreis. Twelve melodies characterise the signs of the zodiac. Dirk Veulemans’ composition Voyager I & II arose from the awe of space and the amazement that humans were capable of sending two unmanned spacecraft, Voyagers 1 and 2, into interstellar space. In 2012, some 35 years after their launch, these unmanned probes crossed the boundaries of the solar system and sent masses of data to Earth during their journey.
