Miidera Temple Shomyo chanting ensemble

Japan

Mii-ryu Shomyō is the sacred Buddhist liturgical chant of Mii-dera Temple, tracing its roots back to ancient Sanskrit and Tang Dynasty China. Belonging to the Tendaijimon lineage, it is historically celebrated for its powerful and dynamic style, captured in the phrase: "The sleeping melody of Hiezan, the fierce melody of Mii." Characterized by the "Ikari-bushi" (fierce melody) and the "Atari" vocal technique, its performance is poetically described as "waves violently crashing against a cliff, shattering, and sweeping back into the ocean with renewed momentum."
